  • Newcastle United defender to leave in January
  • Emile Kraft heading to Copenhagen in January?

Danish giants FC Copenhagen are reportedly targeting Newcastle United’s right-back Emil Craft as a key player in the January transfer window, according to Bold Via Campo.

The Superliga champions are in the market for a new full-back following a major defensive setback, with first-choice right-back Rodrigo Huecas out for the rest of the season with a serious knee injury.

With limited options available, Copenhagen are now preparing a concrete approach for Kraft and could potentially accept a move for regular playing time.

Uekas’ injury left a big hole in Copenhagen’s back line. The Mexican defender has been an impressive performer for the team this season, providing both defensive solidity and attacking drives down the right flank.

His absence forced the Danish champions to re-evaluate their transfer priorities and, after considering several options, the club reportedly turned to Kraft, a player who fits the profile of experience, international pedigree and availability.

Craft, 31, has found himself on the fringe at St James’ Park under manager Eddie Howe. The Sweden international has only made one appearance this season, starting in September’s EFL Cup game against Bradford City, which Newcastle won 4-1.

The veteran defender has struggled for minutes with competition from the likes of Kieran Trippier and Tino Libramento, and the situation is only getting worse as he enters the final year of his contract.

He has also been left out of the recent Swedish national team, a clear sign that the lack of playing time is starting to affect his international prospects.

According to the newspaper, the Danish side are ready for a move and want to take advantage of his contract situation to negotiate a modest transfer fee.

His experience with Sweden in the Premier League, Serie A and international football could bring much-needed stability to a squad dealing with injuries and fixture congestion.

A sale in January could allow the Magpies to clear wages and open the door for further additions in defense or promotion to the academy.

For Kraft himself, a move to Copenhagen could reignite his career and keep him in contention for the Swedish national team.
