Leeds United are currently preparing for a January move for Brentford’s Fabio Carvalho amid concerns over their lack of attacking threat.
Leeds have only picked up one point from their last three Premier League games, but their last game saw them pick up a vital three points against struggling West Ham United, meaning they now sit six points clear of the relegation zone.
Survival is undoubtedly Daniel Farke’s main objective this season, and he clearly believes strengthening his front line will be key to increasing his team’s chances of avoiding relegation, having brought in the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lucas Nmeka in the summer.
However, it was the promotion-winning duo of Brenden Aaronson and Joe Rodon who scored against West Ham, with Calvert-Lewin unable to provide any threat, posting just 0.1 xG.
Nmeka hasn’t exactly been prolific since joining, failing to score since converting a penalty against Everton on the opening day, and Los Blancos have joined the race to sign a new forward.
Leeds considering January move for Carvalho
According to a report from MOT Leeds News, there are concerns that Leeds lack an attacking threat this season, and they are keen to strengthen their front line in January, with preparations to sign Carvalho from Brentford on loan.
The board is considering signing several new attacking players, including a striker, but is also keen to inject more creativity into the squad, meaning Los Blancos are set to compete with Bundesliga clubs for the Brentford forward.
The 23-year-old has found it difficult to feature in matches this season, but the German, who is a fan of versatile players, feels he could be ideal for manager Farke given his ability to play in a number of positions.
The Portuguese attacker can play on either wing, in a number 10 role or even as a centre-forward, and his attacking ability was on display regularly during his loan spell at Fulham, scoring 10 goals and providing eight assists in the 2021-22 Championship.
The former Hull City loanee also impressed for the Tigers, scoring nine goals in the Championship in 2023-24, during which time he was hailed as “fantastic” by Fabrizio Romano.
That said, there may be some concern over the fact that the four-time Portuguese Under-21 international is yet to establish himself as a mainstay at Brentford, despite scoring a dramatic late equalizer against Chelsea in September.
Carvalho is yet to make his mark in the top flight, but it would still be a low-risk signing given Leeds aim to sign him on loan in January this year.
