Report: Erik ten Hag rumored to be linked with surprise managerial return to the Premier League

Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is reportedly being discussed as a candidate to manage Wolves.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, the Dutch manager is among the names being discussed within the Timberwolves team.

Ornstein claims the Wolves have had internal discussions about Ten Hag as one of multiple names vying for the role.

The Midlands club are considering all possible options to find the right manager to make amends after a dismal start to the season.

Wolves currently sit 20th in the league with 0 wins, 2 draws and 8 losses in 10 games.

This dismal performance has left them in the middle of a relegation battle and they will need someone who can instantly inspire them and lift them out of the relegation zone.

Several other names have been mentioned so far. Former Man United midfielder Michael Carrick was another player who had a great time at Middlesbrough.

Former Liverpool and Spurs star Robbie Keane has also been linked with the role.

Gary O’Neill, who was sacked by Wolves last year, was thought to be the frontrunner to return to the club, but according to Ornstein’s latest update, O’Neill has withdrawn from consideration.

Is Erik ten Hag the right man for the Wolves job?

Erik ten Hag built a strong reputation at Ajax due to his excellent work at the Dutch club.

Ten Hag, who took over in December 2017, took over a talented but underperforming team and quickly instilled a clear tactical identity based on high pressing, intelligent positional play and fluid attacking football.

Under his leadership, Ajax became known for its fearless approach, combining traditional Dutch total football principles with modern intensity and discipline.

The 2018/19 season remains the pinnacle of his Ajax reign. Under Ten Hag, Ajax had an impressive run in the Champions League, defeating Real Madrid and Juventus on their way to the semi-finals and coming within seconds of reaching the final.

He also led Ajax to multiple Eredivisie titles and the KNVB Cup, reestablishing their dominance in Dutch football.

Ten Hag’s success earned him a move to Manchester United, which brought renewed optimism to his first season.

He led United to a third-place finish and won the Carabao Cup, ending the club’s six-year trophy drought.

However, his second season crumbled amid poor performances and dressing room turmoil, with United finishing eighth in the Premier League.

Despite this, Ten Hag were able to defeat Manchester City in the final and win the FA Cup, a victory that temporarily bought them time.

After a poor start to the 2024/25 season, INEOS sacked Ten Hag and appointed Ruben Amorim as his replacement.

His short and unsuccessful spell at Bayer Leverkusen further tarnished his reputation, but the Dutchman’s pedigree, built on his time at Ajax and his trophy record, is undeniable.

For Wolves hoping to avoid relegation, appointing an experienced manager like Erik ten Hag who wants to prove himself in England could be worth the gamble.
