Manchester United held off Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League as Matthijs de Ligt beat Guglielmo Vicario deep in second-half stoppage time and instantly canceled out Richarlison’s deft flick.
A truly spectacular match. However, this is also true for Spurs, who have struggled to maintain good form at home and are unable to produce the creative performances to maintain their place at the top of the league.

Of course, the season is still young, but Thomas Frank has seen his team struggle in many of the fixtures, so he has a lot to chew on.

Spurs performance against Manchester United
Tottenham’s creativity problems were once again exposed as Man United took control in the first half. Frank’s tweaks during the interval improved the situation, and a flurry late in the game almost sealed the opposition’s springboard to victory, but defensive mistakes meant the club only won one of five at home in the Premier League.
Without the injured Mohamed Kudus, Tottenham will always stand up, but Richarlison and Brennan Johnson have mainly flattered to deceive in the wings.
Franck’s attacking experiments were unsuccessful and Richarlison was pushed wide to accommodate Randal Kolo Muani as central striker. The French loanee was hooked at half-time and Richarlison scored a goal in the second half, but the overall performance was not his best.
After the match, the Danish manager chose to draw positives from the performance, but once he sits in the war room and assesses Tottenham’s performance during the international break, he is sure to decide on some changes.
One of them may be the difficult decision to let go of one of the team’s key players. This player is one of the most talented players in Down’s N17 squad, and he is also one whose vulnerability was exposed against the Red Devils.
Frank must finally take down Spurs’ ‘disaster’
Few would dispute that Pedro Polo is one of Europe’s most talented and creative full-backs, but his defense has been questionable at times, highlighted when he struggles to make things work on the ball.
And it was the same against Manchester United.
Brian Mbeumo scored a classic goal against the Lilywhites, heading inside the area after meeting Amad Diallo’s whipped cross. The Cameroonian deflected behind Polo and scored a goal.
Additionally, the 26-year-old was responsible for some questionable decision-making and positioning throughout the contest, completely isolated from the role Frank expected him to play against a team desperate to succeed and find their footing.
Porro, caught after 67 minutes, struggled to impose himself on United’s forwards, losing the ball a shocking 29 times despite not creating a single chance, and lacked his trademark playmaking quality. He attempted 12 crosses, but only one found his mark (data courtesy of Sofascore).
Polish journalist Michael Okonski even called the accuracy of his delivery a “disaster.”
Football.london gave him a match rating of 5/10 and drew attention to these issues, so Frank needs to seriously consider making tactical adjustments.
Spence has struggled to support the forwards from his awkward position on the left, and given that he has grown in both maturity and confidence in the Premier League over the past year or so, it may be worth moving him into the polo space and relegating the Spaniard to the bench.
