  • O’Neill could be substituted for Celtic during international break
    • So close: 209-70 manager excited about Celtic

Martin O’Neill could be in charge of his final game as Celtic’s caretaker manager, according to a major update.

O’Neill is a hugely popular figure at Parkhead, and the 73-year-old has restored a positive atmosphere to the club following the disappointing end to Brendan Rodgers’ tenure as manager.

The Northern Irishman has spoken about his future at Celtic in recent days, admitting he is still struggling to return but does not know what his next step will be.

“I have to go back to London again. I’m going to go into a dark room and come out on Thursday thinking, ‘Did this really happen?'” So I have to imagine that at some stage next week, whether it’s tomorrow or next Saturday or Sunday, someone will tell me what’s going on.

“No, I really don’t know. But if they make an announcement about a new coach, say, next week or so, I’m going to take these two weeks and I was going to say something pretty morbid to the grave, but wait a minute. Well, you never know, but it was a great result.”

O’Neill will eventually learn that he is not Celtic’s long-term answer and his appointment is only a short-term solution, but now a new update on his future has emerged.

In a new ‘development’ last weekend, Columbus Crew boss Wilfried Nancy became one of the leading candidates to join Parkhead, alongside Bodø/Glimt manager Ketil Knudsen. Top target Nancy is currently said to be “available” and ready to join the Hoops immediately following his current club’s exit from the MLS play-offs.

As mentioned earlier, O’Neill doesn’t expect to get the Celtic job permanently, despite some good results, but if he manages his final game for the club, he will leave the team as popular as ever.

After all, the Hoops need to make the right appointment to take the club in the right direction, and if they feel they have found the right choice during the international break, they should make a change immediately.

Wilfried Nancy’s directorial career

Columbus Crew – MLS Cup Winner (2023), league cup winners (2024)

  • Match – 132

  • Victory – 71

  • Draw – 32

  • Loss – 33

CF Montreal – Canadian Championship Winner (2021)

  • Match – 79

  • Victory – 38

  • Draw – 16

  • Loss – 25

Nancy has won 109 of 209 games as a manager in North America and looks like an interesting option at the moment, but one big risk is that, unlike Knutsen at Bodø/Glimt, he hasn’t been able to prove himself in Europe.
