Liverpool star Andy Robertson has admitted his future at Anfield remains uncertain as his contract enters its final stages and talks over an extension have not yet begun.
The Scotland international, who has been one of the most influential left-backs in world football for the past decade, said he is “relaxed” about his future, whether that means signing a new contract or moving on at the end of the season.
The 31-year-old defender, who joined Liverpool from Hull City in 2017 for just £8m, was one of the defining figures of the Jurgen Klopp era and was a cornerstone of the Reds’ domestic and European success.
Andy Robertson was a huge success at Liverpool
Since joining, Robertson has made over 280 appearances for the club, winning two Premier League titles, a Champions League, an FA Cup and a Club World Cup.
His tireless energy, leadership and consistency made him a fan favorite and symbol of Liverpool’s fiery style.
However, this season brings new challenges. Under Arne Slott, Robertson faces competition from talented Hungarian full-back Milos Kerkes, who was signed last summer.
After a shaky start to the season, Robertson appears to have regained his starting role, starting four games in a row before the international break.
Still, speculation about his long-term future continues. The veteran full-back was linked with a move to Atletico Madrid last summer and remains subject to strong interest from European clubs even as he enters the final year of his contract.
As reported by the Standard, Mr Robertson handled the situation with typical calm and humility.
“I think last season everyone was tired of talking about these three (Salah, Van Dijk and Trent), but for me the relationship with the club has been great.
“They’ve done everything for me and my family, and I don’t think I’ve been too bad for them either. Whatever happens is going to happen behind closed doors and I’m relaxed about it. If this is my last year, it’s my last year. If not, so be it.”
Asked if contract negotiations were progressing, Robertson suggested they were on hold.
“I had a stressful summer making decisions.
“I’ve been telling myself over the next few months to just enjoy it. Of course, closer to the end of the season it will probably start to take over my life, but right now I’m just focused on football.”
Robertson’s future remains undecided
Liverpool’s management are reportedly still on the fence about whether to offer Robertson a contract extension or start succession planning with a young player like Kerkes.
The club values Robertson’s leadership and experience, but also needs to balance its long-term strategy with several senior players approaching the twilight of their careers.
For now, Robertson’s focus is purely on helping to stabilize Liverpool’s shaky title defense as they currently battle instability in the Premier League.
