Cristiano Ronaldo Makes History With First International Red Card After Pledging to ‘Behave’ in Portugal’s 2-0 Loss to Ireland

Cristiano Ronaldo has represented Portugal in 226 international matches over 22 years without receiving a red card—until now. During a World Cup qualifier against Ireland, he was sent off for the first time in his career after elbowing defender Dara O’Shea. Initially shown a yellow card, VAR intervened and upgraded it to a red in the 61st minute.

In the match, Ireland triumphed over Portugal, scoring 2-0 with Troy Parrott netting both goals in the first half. Just before the red card incident, Ronaldo appeared emotional, raising his hands in a gesture towards the Irish players. However, after receiving the card, he grimaced and left the field, giving a thumbs up as he departed.

This incident followed Ronaldo’s assertion that he would stay composed despite the expected jeers from Irish fans at the Aviva Stadium. He acknowledged the passionate support the Irish fans showed for their national team, expressing his hope to minimize the boos he might receive.

Irish fans relished the moment as they booed Ronaldo when he was sent off, capturing the event on their phones and mimicking his emotional response. Over his extensive career, Ronaldo has accumulated nearly 30 yellow cards for Portugal, but this was his first red card. While he has faced ejections during his club career—totaling 10 red cards throughout 24 years—none came from his international play until now.

Ireland’s unexpected win has shifted dynamics in Group F of the qualifiers, with Portugal still leading with 10 points, followed by Hungary at 8 points and Ireland at 7 points. The upcoming matchday will see a critical face-off between Ireland and Hungary, while Portugal needs only a win or draw against Armenia to secure the group victory.

Fan Take: This historic moment for Ronaldo resonates deeply in the soccer community because it marks a significant shift in his long career. It not only emphasizes the intensity of international competitions but also highlights how every match can drastically influence the larger narrative within the sport.
