Newcastle could be busy in January and Alexander Isak’s summer departure means there is scope for further reinforcements. However, one or two players could leave, with Fabian Schaal also linked with a move from St James’ Park.

Schaal joined Newcastle for just £3m in 2018 and was an excellent servant during his seven years on Tyneside. However, he is slowly losing prominence, with summer signings Malik Thiau, Sven Botman and Dan Byrne all considered to be above him in the centre-back pecking order.

A return to the Bundesliga could be on the cards for Schaal, as Pete O’Rourke (via Football Insider) revealed the Swiss international could be tempted to leave once the transfer window opens.

“Obviously, Schar is out of contract at the end of the season and there is potentially interest from overseas on a free transfer. Eddie Howe would ideally want to keep Fabian Schar. He certainly wouldn’t want to lose him midway through the season.”

“Ideally, Newcastle would like to keep Fabian Schaal, but it will be up to the player whether he wants to stay or not. If he is not playing regularly at this stage of his career, he may be tempted to move on in search of first-team regularity. He started the first four games of the season but was clearly out of place with an injury. Malik Thiaw then came in and has been outstanding alongside Sven Botman.”

Should Schall leave Newcastle in January?

Since Schaal is retired from international football, he won’t have to worry about competing for a spot in the Swiss squad for next summer’s World Cup, but he will want to play regularly. In this regard, Newcastle would like to keep him until the summer.
