NBA Launches Policy Review After Rozier and Billups Face Gambling-Related Arrests

The NBA is taking steps to safeguard the integrity of the game as well as the well-being of players and coaches following the recent arrests of Miami guard Terry Rozier and Portland coach Chauncey Billups over their alleged involvement in a gambling scandal. The league communicated this concern in a memo distributed to all 30 teams, obtained by The Associated Press.

The NBA’s legal department stated that with the rise of legal gambling in most U.S. states, recurring integrity issues in sports, and new betting formats, it is crucial to reassess how sports betting should be regulated to best protect the league, its players, and fans. Recently, federal authorities unsealed indictments and arrested nearly 30 individuals, including Billups and Rozier. Rozier faces allegations of conspiring with others to secure wins on bets regarding performances in games during his time with Charlotte, echoing charges similar to those against former Toronto player Jontay Porter, who was banned by Commissioner Adam Silver in 2024.

Unusual betting patterns on a Charlotte game involving Rozier’s performance were flagged by sportsbooks, prompting an NBA investigation, which found insufficient evidence to confirm rule violations by Rozier. The league noted that while the suspicious bet on Rozier’s “Under” in a March 2023 game was legally placed and detected in real-time, more legal and regulatory measures are necessary, especially concerning bets linked to individual player performances, which raise integrity concerns.

The NBA is also reviewing injury reporting protocols, a system introduced to enhance transparency by requiring frequent updates on player status before games. If bettors receive insider information about injuries before the public does, it constitutes a form of insider trading. Former NBA player Damon Jones is currently charged with tipping off bettors on the health conditions of Lakers players LeBron James and Anthony Davis before their status was officially disclosed, a practice federal authorities suggest has occurred at other teams as well.

The memo emphasized the importance of educating players, coaches, and personnel about the risks gambling poses to their careers, ensuring injury disclosure rules are adequate, and protecting players from harassment by bettors. The league is consulting with teams to determine the best path forward.

Fan Take: This development is crucial for basketball fans as it highlights the ongoing battle to preserve the sport’s fairness and credibility amid growing gambling influences. Strengthening safeguards around betting and transparency is essential to protect the integrity of the game and the trust of its supporters.
