Bill Mott Stays Optimistic: Sovereign Likely to Make a Comeback to Training

Godolphin’s star horse Sovereignty, winner of the Kentucky Derby (G1), Belmont (G1), and Traverse (G1), was unable to compete in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at Del Mar due to a fever. However, trainer Bill Mott anticipates that Sovereignty will resume training in 2026. Speaking with FanDuel’s Andy Biancone at Churchill Downs, Mott expressed confidence that the homebred Into Mischief colt would return to racing under their care. Currently resting at Keeneland under the watch of experienced jockey Johnny Burke, who oversees Godolphin’s rehabilitation and pre-training, Sovereignty has had an impressive season, winning five out of six races, including notable victories in the Fountain of Youth (G2), Jim Dandy (G2), and the Triple Crown events, along with Saratoga’s Midsummer Derby.

Sovereignty was favored 6-5 for the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic on November 1 but was pulled from the race on October 29 due to health concerns. At that time, Godolphin was deliberating his participation, and regardless of the outcome at Del Mar, the plan is for him to race again next year. Mott remains hopeful and optimistic about Sovereignty’s return to training, awaiting an official announcement.

Fan Take: This update is significant for horse racing enthusiasts because Sovereignty has been a standout contender this year, and his return could reshape the competitive landscape for the coming season. His presence on the track in 2026 promises to bring excitement and high-caliber racing back to the sport, reinforcing the legacy of elite Thoroughbreds.
