Shohei Ohtani, who recently secured his second straight World Series victory, is already setting his sights on winning back-to-back titles once more. On Monday, the Los Angeles star revealed via social media his plan to represent Japan again in the 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC). This will mark his second appearance in the WBC after debuting in 2023, when he helped Japan clinch their third gold medal while earning the tournament MVP honors.

In his announcement, Ohtani expressed gratitude to fans, saying, “Thank you to all the fans for a great season. I’m practicing hard and looking forward to seeing you next year.” With Ohtani back on Team Japan, they are seen as frontrunners to defend their 2023 championship. One of Ohtani’s standout moments was his gold medal-winning strikeout against former Angels teammate and Team USA star Mike Trout, capping off an incredible tournament run.

During the 2023 tournament, Ohtani played seven games as a batter, boasting a .435 average with 10 hits, one homer, and eight RBIs. As a pitcher, he threw in three games with a 1.86 ERA and 11 strikeouts. In the 2026 WBC, Ohtani and Japan will compete in Pool C on March 6 at Tokyo Dome alongside Chinese Taipei, South Korea, Australia, and the Czech Republic.

Fan Take: Ohtani’s commitment to the WBC highlights his dedication to international baseball, which continues to grow in prestige and excitement for fans worldwide. His participation promises to elevate the competition and inspire a new generation of players, potentially transforming the global baseball landscape.
