Alonso Dismisses Rumors as Madrid Faces Challenges

Xabi Alonso has stated that he is “not paying attention” to rumors regarding his future at Real Madrid and believes there’s “no requirement” for the club to send messages of support as they gear up to face Olympiakos in the Champions League.

Alonso has been under scrutiny since taking charge, facing criticism for his player selections, tactics, and management as he navigates a winless stretch of three games, including a loss to Liverpool and draws against Rayo Vallecano and Elche.

During a press conference in Piraeus on Tuesday, Alonso acknowledged the importance of managing star egos at Madrid and reflected on how his former coaches, Carlo Ancelotti and Jose Mourinho, would have handled the current situation.

When asked about his enjoyment of the role after three months in charge, he responded, “It’s difficult.” He noted that such challenges are not new in management and mentioned how he often contemplates the strategies of Ancelotti and Mourinho, emphasizing the need for resilience.

Despite leading La Liga by a slim point over Barcelona and earning nine points from four Champions League matches, Alonso has faced backlash. Reports have surfaced that his relationship with some players is tense, particularly with Vinicius Junior, who has expressed dissatisfaction after a limited playing time.

Alonso emphasized that managing egos is as critical as tactical and physical preparation, highlighting the need to work with diverse personalities to maximize their potential. He reflected on his experience with high-caliber players and the importance of honest communication, stating, “We need to manage external noise and focus on what we can control.”

When questioned about support from club officials amid the team’s struggles, Alonso remarked, “There’s no need for messages of support,” revealing that he had spoken with President Florentino Pérez recently and that communication is regular and effective.

Defender Álvaro Carreras added, “The atmosphere is really good. We have a strong group along with a coach and 25 players… we share a good relationship.”

Fan Take: This story underscores the significant pressures that come with coaching at elite clubs like Real Madrid. For soccer fans, the outcome of Alonso’s management could set a precedent for how coaches handle challenging dynamics in high-stakes environments, impacting both player performance and overall team morale.
