NYCFC Embraces ‘Bulletproof’ Mindset in Showdown Against Messi

New York City FC head coach Pascal Jansen announced that his team will adopt a “bulletproof” mentality as they prepare to face Inter Miami in the Eastern Conference finals at Chase Stadium on Saturday night, aiming to neutralize the impact of star players like Lionel Messi who could influence the game dynamics.

Since taking the reins at the start of the 2025 season, Jansen has led NYCFC to the brink of securing its second MLS Cup, falling just one game short.

“When I joined the team and began this project, I emphasized the need for a bulletproof mindset to my players and staff,” Jansen told ESPN this week. “It’s crucial to stay focused on your own responsibilities, no matter who you are up against or where the match is held.”

Recognizing the legendary status of Messi, Jansen acknowledges the positive influence he brings to the league but emphasizes the importance of remaining competitive: “When facing a player of Messi’s caliber, it’s easy to be overwhelmed—players must stay focused on their roles to achieve our team’s goals.”

NYCFC has struggled against Inter Miami this season, drawing 2-2 in their first matchup and suffering a 4-0 defeat at Citi Field in September. However, Jansen believes his team has made significant progress since then and will present a stronger challenge.

“It’s going to be a tough match,” he stated. “We’ve played them twice already. The first game set the stage for our understanding of facing a team with Messi, and how that alters the atmosphere for everyone involved.”

Jansen recognizes the valuable lessons learned from past encounters that will guide their growth as a squad heading into the decisive third match. Despite the tight competition, he remains optimistic about improving their performance.

NYCFC ended the regular season in fifth place in the Eastern Conference, successfully navigating the playoffs by defeating Charlotte FC and the Supporters’ Shield champions, Philadelphia Union, to reach this critical stage.

Conversely, Inter Miami advanced as the third seed, securing their playoff spot with an impressive double victory over Nashville SC and FC Cincinnati, boasting a star-studded lineup that includes Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba.

When asked if he feels comfortable being labeled an underdog, Jansen emphasized the significance of mental fortitude. “I don’t mind being seen as the underdog; it’s part of the bulletproof mindset. External opinions don’t affect us; it’s all just noise.”

The winner of this matchup will move on to face either San Diego FC or the Vancouver Whitecaps in the MLS Cup on December 6.

Fan Take: This matchup is a pivotal moment not just for NYCFC and Inter Miami, but for MLS as a whole. With star power like Messi on display, the game could elevate the profile of American soccer and showcase the league’s growing competitiveness on a national scale.
