Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson extended his impressive season on Friday in a game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. He provided an assist for Brian Rust’s goal early in the third period, bringing his career points total to 684. This assist marks Karlsson’s 684th career assist, placing him 12th all-time among NHL defensemen, and just 28 assists shy of tying Scott Stevens for 11th place.

This assist also lifted Karlsson’s total points to 885, tying him with Peter Forsberg for the eighth-highest point scorer among Swedish players in NHL history. Karlsson has emerged as the Penguins’ standout defenseman this season, contributing one goal and 15 points in 23 games. His strong performance across all three zones continues to fuel the team’s offense from the blue line.

Following Rust’s goal to make it 3-2, Sidney Crosby scored his second goal to even the score, and Kris Letang secured the victory in overtime. This win marked the Penguins’ first overtime triumph of the season. Karlsson aims to keep advancing his stats when the Penguins face the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday.
