Paquetá Slams Liverpool Red Card Decision: ‘It’s Absurd!’

Lucas Paqueta of West Ham criticized his red card in the match against Liverpool, stating it symbolizes the “ridiculous” challenges he has faced over the past two years. He attributed this to the Football Association’s insufficient support in light of the significant violence he has encountered.

Previously, Paqueta was accused of intentionally accumulating four yellow cards during Premier League matches from November 2022 to August 2023, but earlier this year, he was cleared of four match-fixing allegations following an extensive investigation by the FA.

In Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool, Paqueta earned a yellow card for a foul, only to be sent off after receiving a second card for dissent.

Former West Ham goalkeeper Rob Green criticized Paqueta’s actions on Sky Sports, labeling them “completely irresponsible.”

After the match, Paqueta took to social media to address the red card incident, posting the footage along with his comments.

“This absurd situation mirrors all the difficulties I’ve faced and continue to face! I apologize, but I’m not perfect,” he remarked.

In addition, he expressed in Portuguese: “I realize that I have to be portrayed as the antagonist right now. It’s challenging to cope with everything impacting my life and mental health!”

“I will strive to remain unaffected by any further negativity.

“However, this doesn’t excuse my expulsion, and I sincerely apologize to my fans and teammates for that!”

Goals from Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo followed Paqueta’s red card, placing Liverpool in a crucial 17th position under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Nuno commented post-match that he would refrain from discussing the sending off until he had spoken to the players involved.

In October, Paqueta received a warning regarding his conduct due to non-cooperation with an investigation into cheating allegations.

ESPN has reached out to the FA for further comment.

Fan Take: This news matters to soccer enthusiasts as it highlights the broader issues of player conduct and mental health in the sport. Paqueta’s struggles reflect a growing concern for player welfare that fans hope the FA will address more seriously moving forward.
