Xabi Alonso commented on Real Madrid’s latest performance, noting that “It’s a long season,” after they drew 1-1 with Girona, marking their third consecutive tie in La Liga.

Madrid fell behind with Azzedine Ounahi’s goal just before halftime at Montilivi, and although Kylian Mbappé leveled the score with a penalty, they were unable to turn the match around completely.

This result leaves Madrid just one point behind Barcelona, who will face fourth-place Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.

“We improved in the second half and created more chances,” Alonso mentioned during the post-match conference. “We weren’t decisive enough to secure the three points, but the season is still long, and we must keep pushing forward.”

Madrid began the season strong, winning 10 of their first 11 league matches. However, recent draws against Rayo Vallecano and Elche, along with the defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League, have raised concerns about Alonso’s strategy.

“The season has various phases,” he reflected on Sunday. “At the start, we were more consistent away from home.”

Alonso praised the team’s determination to come back from a 1-0 deficit against Girona, stating they had several clear chances to score the winning goal.

Following the match, Alonso remarked, “I have no criticism” for the players.

“The response to falling behind was positive,” he said. “It wasn’t enough, but we came close. With many away matches ahead, we need to stay united and maintain the right mindset. We have an opportunity in Bilbao against Athletic Club on Wednesday, so we’ll see.”

Alonso expressed surprise that a potential foul on substitute Rodrigo in the penalty area was not reviewed by the referee.

“I haven’t seen it, but I heard VAR may have checked it,” he said. “Those are the crucial moments that can sway the result of the game.”

Opinion: This news is significant for soccer fans as it highlights Real Madrid’s struggle to maintain top form in a highly competitive league. The outcome of these matches could impact the title race and set the tone for the rest of the season, affecting fans’ hopes and expectations.
