The Mexican Football Federation revealed on Tuesday that Azteca Stadium will reopen in March, kicking off with a friendly match between Mexico and Portugal featuring Cristiano Ronaldo as part of the preparations for the 2026 World Cup. The historic stadium, closed since last May for renovations, is set to host five matches during the World Cup, including the opening game on June 11.

Recently renamed Banorte Stadium, Azteca will make history by being the first venue to host three opening matches of the World Cup. Mexico, a previous host in 1970 and 1986, will co-host the upcoming tournament alongside the United States and Canada. The game against Portugal is scheduled for March 28, followed by a warm-up match against Belgium on March 31 at Soldier Field in Chicago.

After a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Paraguay in November, coach Javier Aguirre expressed a desire for two friendly matches in January featuring players from Central American leagues, though the Mexican federation has yet to confirm these arrangements.

Fan Take: This reopening is significant as it revitalizes one of soccer’s most iconic stadiums ahead of an exciting World Cup, sparking enthusiasm among fans and players alike. As the tournament approaches, these matches will be crucial for Mexico’s preparation, making the stakes higher for both players and supporters.
