Manager Carlo Ancelotti has cautioned Neymar and Vinicius Junior that they must be “100 percent” fit to be chosen for the 2026 World Cup in Brazil. He emphasized that past reputations will not secure a spot for them on the journey to the U.S., Canada, or Mexico. This comes at a critical moment for Neymar, whose return to Santos has been clouded by ongoing health issues.

Neymar confronts new injury setbacks

After transferring from Paris Saint-Germain to Al Hilal in 2023, Neymar suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament representing Brazil and has been working hard for nearly 18 months to rejoin the field. His switch to the Saudi league did not unfold as anticipated, leading him to return to Santos in January 2025 with hopes of rejuvenating both the club and his national career.

However, the situation proved to be challenging; he netted only seven goals in 25 appearances, and his second year focused more on rehabilitation than performance. Repeated injuries have hindered him, jeopardizing his chances of making the national squad with the World Cup approaching.

Santos coach Juan Pablo Vojvoda announced that Neymar is sidelined once again due to significant knee discomfort during a recent match against Internacional. Despite this, the 33-year-old managed to inspire Santos in a 3-0 victory over Sport, helping elevate the team out of the relegation zone.

Ancelotti not taking chances with unfit players

Ancelotti has made it clear that no player will receive preferential treatment. When questioned about Neymar’s situation, he also issued a warning to Vinicius, who has been struggling this season.

“He has to be 100%,” Ancelotti emphasized, noting the team’s abundance of talented players. “If Vinicius is at 90%, we’ll choose another player who is 100%, as we have a roster full of exceptional talent up front.”

While acknowledging Neymar’s extraordinary talent, Ancelotti recognized that injuries have frequently disrupted his career.

“I regard him as a fantastic talent,” Ancelotti remarked. “His injuries have held him back from performing at his best.”

Neymar speaks on his injuries

Despite his setbacks, Neymar remains committed to working hard. After a recent match, he acknowledged the mental toll injuries have taken but is optimistic about contributing during the remaining weeks of the season.

“I’m improving every day,” Neymar stated post-game. “Though this injury is frustrating, it doesn’t stop me from playing. My focus is on Santos and helping the club reach its rightful place in the top league.”

Race against time for fourth World Cup

Doubts are rising regarding Neymar’s chances of making the World Cup squad. His availability for the remainder of Santos’ 2025 season is uncertain, and with Brazil’s football calendar offering few opportunities until March, Ancelotti is unlikely to bend the rules for him despite his contributions in the past.

One proposed solution is for Neymar to temporarily return to Europe in early 2026, where consistent play could bolster his case for the national team.

Neymar’s situation is vital for soccer fans as it highlights the ongoing battle between talent and physical fitness in elite sports. His potential exclusion could reshape Brazil’s World Cup strategy, emphasizing the need for players to maintain their form amidst challenges.
