  • Thomas Frank responds to growing pressure from Tottenham
        • Tottenham could prove ‘attractive’ for the manager, who Levy had been urged to hire ahead of Frank
    • Spurs star in danger of becoming Dele Alli 2.0 under Thomas Frank

Tottenham Hotspur are currently reportedly considering signing a Premier League goalkeeper to potentially replace the out-of-form Guglielmo Vicario.

Thomas Frank responds to growing pressure from Tottenham

There were high hopes that summer signing Thomas Frank could take Tottenham to the next level. No matter how you look at it, it was a very reasonable promise. But that initial hope has now begun to fade, with pressure mounting on the Dane to turn things around as names like Marco Silva start to be dropped.

It was Cristian Romero’s two goals, including a late overhead kick, that saved Spurs against Newcastle United, where Frank’s attacking line continued to struggle.

But the pressure doesn’t seem to have gotten to Frank, who told reporters when asked if he would have time to make his mark in north London: “Yes, I am very confident.

“Obviously the owners, I’m only just getting to know them, but they seem like good, intelligent people. They know how to run a business, they’ve learned about football, and they’re learning even more now that they’re owners. I think when we’re around intelligent people, they realize that every successful dynasty, every successful club takes time.”

“Sure, you might win in year one or two, but you can’t sustain it unless you build something sustainable. It’s impossible.”

That being said, even Frank may not be able to deny that it may take too long for anything to change. The big question is where that change will occur.

Vicario’s position is certainly debatable. The goalkeeper was booed by fans after his mistake against Fulham, after which Spurs were reportedly linked with a move for James Trafford and Bert Verbruggen.

According to TeamTalk, Tottenham have made initial contact with Verbruggen to check out the Brighton & Hove Albion shot-stopper. He is reportedly someone ENIC admires and will be on their shortlist if they decide to replace Vicario next year.

He is on the verge of leaving his current club.

Unfortunately, they are not the only ones who admire the Dutch. Bayern Munich are also reportedly big fans of Verbruggen and consider him a possible replacement for one of the best goalkeepers of all time, Manuel Neuer.

Vicario’s recent mistakes have made him public enemy number one at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but his underlying numbers suggest he is likely to turn the corner after that moment of madness.

They have also indicated they will not be a major upgrade for Verbruggen, despite coach Fabian Hürzeler describing the Dutchman as an “incredible person”.

The last thing the Spurs want is to waste more money on players who don’t provide the upgrade Frank needs. Unless the Lilywhites find a goalkeeper who has a better record than Vicario, they should at least show faith in their number one for the remainder of the campaign.
