Terrence Crawford Targets Major WBC Backlash After Rejecting $300K Demand and Title Stripped

Terrence Crawford has publicly addressed the loss of one of his boxing titles to Canelo Alvarez. In September, Crawford secured the undisputed super middleweight championship by holding the WBC, WBA, WBO, and IBF belts. However, just three months later, he was stripped of his WBC title due to financial disputes. The WBC demanded a $300,000 fee related to his fight with Canelo Alvarez, and when Crawford did not comply, the organization revoked his title and arranged for Hamza Sheeras and Christian Mbili to compete for the now-vacant 168-pound championship.

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman elaborated on the decision to strip Crawford, which sparked a strong reaction from the boxer on social media. Crawford criticized the WBC’s demands and their perceived superiority over other sanctioning bodies, as well as the idea of paying a large sum simply to hold the belt. He emphasized that fighters risk their lives in the ring, not the sanctioning bodies, and questioned why he should have to pay to carry a title.

This controversy has resonated with fans, who have shown strong support for Crawford online. Many have criticized the exorbitant fees requested by the WBC, likening sanctioning bodies to corrupt organizations. Fans praised Crawford’s stance, highlighting that a belt is just a symbol and doesn’t define the man who holds it.

Fan Take: This saga sheds light on the often opaque and financially driven politics within boxing’s governing bodies, an issue that deeply affects the sport’s top athletes. For fight fans, Crawford’s bold challenge to the WBC could inspire more transparency and fairness in how titles are managed moving forward.
