Red Sox’s Sonny Gray: “It’s tempting to fall into the trap of hating the Yankees”

Sonny Gray, recently acquired by the Red Sox from St. Louis, has quickly made an impact against Boston’s biggest competitor and has begun connecting with the team’s supporters. Gray shared with Boston’s Press Score that it’s easy to be passionate about hating the Yankees, reflecting on his previous time with them. Originally traded from the Oakland Athletics to the Yankees in 2017, Gray had a career-best 3.72 ERA that year but struggled in 2018 before moving to the Cincinnati Reds. He was an All-Star with the Reds and has earned that honor three times throughout his career. Last year, Gray pitched 180.2 innings for the Cardinals with a solid performance overall.

Despite never wanting to join the Yankees, Gray feels a strong connection to Boston and eagerly waived his no-trade clause to join the Red Sox, believing they have a real shot at winning the World Series. The Red Sox acquired the 36-year-old on November 25, giving up several assets in return. Gray is in the final year of his $75 million contract and will join a pitching rotation that includes notable talents like Garrett Crochet and Breian Bello. Although Boston performed well against the Yankees in the regular season, they fell short in the postseason.

Fan Take: Sonny Gray’s move to the Red Sox is a major development that could bolster Boston’s starting pitching and reshape the AL East rivalry. Baseball fans should watch closely, as Gray’s presence might be the difference-maker in Boston’s quest for a championship.
