Rory McIlroy showed his humanity by completely whiffing at the Australian Open.

It may not seem like it sometimes, but world No. 2 Rory McIlroy showed his fellow golfers in the second round of the Australian Open that he is indeed human.

On the 14th hole, McIlroy pushed his tee shot under a low-hanging tree, and on his second attempt, the 2025 Masters champion tried to copy the game’s legend’s move and punch out.

Unfortunately, it didn’t work. McIlroy completely missed the shot and ended up making bogey on the hole.

“I felt like I could get in there, pretty low, like Seve (Ballesteros) used to do, and just kind of hit a 4-iron and get back into play,” McIlroy said. “I got caught on a branch on the way down and obviously went completely over the ball. Honestly, I can’t remember the last time I got a breath of ‘fresh air.’ It wasn’t my best moment, but I’m glad I bounced back after that and played like I did the last few holes. ”

But while McIlroy admitted his opening two races at Royal Melbourne were not up to his standards, he still found a way to rally with a 68 heading into the weekend. McIlroy had three birdies in his final four holes, including a great shot from a small bush for birdie on the 17th hole.

“It wasn’t my best result the last few days, but I’m glad I finished it the way I wanted. I’m happy to be here this weekend. You know, 7 points isn’t that far away. I feel like if I go tomorrow morning and hit some good shots, I’ll be right back in the tournament.”

Daniel Rodriguez and Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen lead the way at 9 under, while McIlroy is far behind at 2 under.
