MLB Winter Meetings Shakeup: Mets Ship Players Out, Yankees Unveil Surprise Starter, and More Bold Moves

The Winter Meetings are baseball’s yearly hub of excitement, set to take place next week in Orlando. During these four intense days, teams engage in trades, free agent signings, and buzzworthy rumors, making it the busiest offseason period when major roster moves often happen.

Here are 10 bold forecasts for this year’s Winter Meetings:

1. All top five free agents sign deals next week. The leading free agents include Kyle Tucker, Alex Bregman, Bo Bichette, Framber Valdez, and Kyle Schwarber. While usually some hold out until the new year, this year all five are expected to commit promptly, ending contract uncertainties before spring training.

2. The Yankees will acquire starting pitchers but skip adding outfielders. Despite interest in outfielders post-Trent Grisham’s qualified offer acceptance, their bigger need lies in pitching due to several starters undergoing elbow surgery. Any outfield pickups will likely be postponed.

3. The Mets will re-sign one of their top two free agents, Pete Alonso or Edwin Diaz, with Diaz the more probable choice to strengthen their bullpen after signing Devin Williams.

4. Nolan Arenado is predicted to be traded to the Diamondbacks, fitting well as a short-term fix at third base while helping the club compete in 2026. The trade could benefit both Arenado and the Cardinals financially.

5. The Orioles will start offering multi-year guaranteed contracts to pitchers, a notable shift under GM Mike Elias who has previously avoided such deals. Framber Valdez stands out as a prime candidate.

6. One of the top three Japanese NPB free agents—Tatsuya Imai, Munetaka Murakami, or Kazuma Okamoto—will sign with an MLB team during the Winter Meetings, with Okamoto most likely to commit early.

7. The Nationals intend to trade at least one player they acquired from the Juan Soto trade, such as Mackenzie Gore or CJ Abrams, signaling ongoing restructuring under new president Paul Toboni.

8. Two new Hall of Famers, Don Mattingly and Fernando Valenzuela, are expected to be inducted by the Modern Era Committee, recognizing their significant impact on the game since 1980.

9. The Rule 5 draft will see fewer than 10 selections, a rarity reflecting teams’ improved strategic protection of prospects and intense competition leaving little roster room for draft picks.

10. The draft lottery winner is unlikely to be a big favorite, with odds stacked against top picks moving far up. The Texas Rangers are suggested as a potential surprise winner, continuing a trend of long-shot lottery outcomes.

Fan Take: These bold predictions highlight the dramatic shifts and strategic moves shaping MLB’s future, emphasizing how the Winter Meetings serve as a pivotal moment for teams aiming to reset and rebuild. For fans, this means thrilling off-season drama and fresh storylines that could redefine the upcoming baseball season.
