Knicks’ Jalen Brunson Opens Up After First 40-Point Game: “I’m Trying Too Hard and Lacking Confidence”

Jalen Brunson delivered his first 40-point performance of the season at a crucial moment, leading the New York Knicks to victory over the Orlando Magic and securing a spot in the NBA Cup Championship in Las Vegas on Tuesday night. The All-Star point guard shot 16-of-27 from the field (59.3 percent) including 2-of-5 from three-point range, though he made just six free throws. Alongside his scoring, Brunson contributed eight assists, four rebounds, and a steal over 39 minutes in a 132-120 win.

After the game, Brunson shared with the NBA on Prime team how his confidence has grown, especially in high-pressure situations. “I’ve been able to make more catches and shots because I feel confident in my shot now,” he said. “I tend to try too hard sometimes, but when things go well, I just keep shooting.”

When asked by former two-time MVP Steve Nash about his improving touch around the rim, Brunson explained that it’s a skill he’s had to develop over time. “I’m not the tallest or someone who jumps over people. My game is unique – I play off-balance while staying balanced. That’s something I’ve worked on for a long time, and it keeps getting better.”

Brunson has already surpassed his highest scoring output from last season (37 points) twice this year, posting 40 points on this occasion and 37 points in previous games against the Heat and Bucks. Averaging 28.3 points over 22 games, he’s scored 30 or more points in each of his last four games. The Knicks, riding a five-game winning streak, will look to Brunson to maintain his confidence and high level of play as they face the winner of the Thunder-Spurs matchup in the NBA Cup Championship semifinals on Tuesday.
