Cooper Flagg made history as the youngest player in NBA history to score at least 40 points in a single game, though the Dallas Mavericks fell 140-133 in overtime to the Utah Jazz. The 18-year-old forward and this year’s No. 1 draft pick tallied 42 points, seven rebounds, and six assists at Delta Center in Salt Lake City.

Among teenagers, only Cliff Robinson (45 points), GG Jackson (44 points), and LeBron James (43 points) have scored more in a game, but Flagg matched Mark Aguirre’s rookie scoring record for the Mavericks. About to turn 19 on Sunday, Flagg became only the third teenager in the NBA’s 79-year history, alongside James and Kevin Durant, to achieve at least 40 points, five rebounds, and five assists in a game.

The Mavericks led 75-71 at halftime with Flagg contributing 24 points, but the game was tied 124-116 near the end of the fourth quarter. After losing an eight-point lead and taking a 129-127 advantage, Max Christie’s two free throws with less than five seconds left tied the game. The Jazz clinched the win in overtime, powered by Keyonte George’s 37 points and Lauri Markkanen’s 33. Utah holds 10th place in the Western Conference, with Dallas sitting 12th.

Cooper Flagg, standing 6-foot-8, initially led Nokomis Regional High School to a state championship in 2021 and was the first freshman named Maine Player of the Year. He later transferred to Montverde Academy in Florida, where he earned the 2022 USA Basketball Boys Player of the Year and the 2024 National High School Player of the Year awards. Flagg was also part of the U.S. team that won the 2022 U-17 World Cup, earning all-tournament team honors.

In his freshman year at Duke during the 2024-25 season, Flagg averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 4.2 assists over 37 games, helping lead the team to the Final Four and being named National Collegiate Player of the Year. Since making his Mavericks debut against the San Antonio Spurs in October, he has averaged 17.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists across 25 games.

Fan Take: Cooper Flagg’s record-breaking performance highlights the arrival of a new generation of basketball phenoms, signaling a thrilling future for the NBA. For fans, it’s a chance to witness the growth of a potential superstar who could shape the league for years to come.
