There is no denying that things have improved at West Ham United since Nuno Espirito Santo took over as manager.
However, the team still has many problems and Saturday afternoon’s 3-0 loss to Manchester City was a reminder of that fact.
The team has talent, but also some serious holes and a lack of cutting edge.
Fortunately, if reports are to be believed, West Ham are looking to address this issue and have already identified someone who would be a real upgrade to Callum Wilson.
West Ham aim to upgrade Wilson
Now, there is no denying that West Ham’s squad as a whole has problems, but the need to bring in a new number nine is particularly acute.
After all, while Wilson hasn’t been very good, he is the only unique nine the manager can bring in, as the fugitive Niklas Furkrug isn’t good enough.
So it comes as no surprise to hear that the club are looking to sign a new striker.
At least that’s according to a recent report from Brazil, reported by Sport Witness, which claims West Ham are interested in free scorer Caio Jorge.
In fact, the report goes further and reveals that the East Londoners had made an initial offer to loan him until the end of the season for 4 million euros, with an obligation to buy him for 21 million euros (approximately £22 million in total).
Unfortunately, that offer was rejected and it appears the forward’s club Cruzeiro have no intention of selling him unless a bigger offer is made.
It could therefore be an expensive and complicated transfer to get over the line, but given Jorge’s ability and potential, West Ham should continue to fight for him, especially as he would be an upgrade over Wilson.
Jorge and Wilson comparison
Now, when comparing two strikers, the first thing to look at, and the most important measure of all, is their respective outputs.
Unfortunately for Wilson, this is the area in which he is a distant second best.
For example, in 15 appearances this season and a total of 627 minutes, the Englishman has scored four goals and provided one assist.
That’s a reasonable average of being involved in a goal every three games, or every 125.4 minutes.

Jorge, on the other hand, played 46 games and 3,471 minutes in Brazil, finishing the season with an impressive 26 goals and 9 assists.
This works out to an impressive average of being involved in a goal every 1.31 games, or every 99.17 minutes.
Of course, there’s the caveat that he posted such numbers in a weak league, but it’s still clear that he just “won’t stop scoring goals,” in the words of analyst Filipe Souza.
In addition to his grades, what the Cruzeiro star sees as a potential contender is his youth.
The Orinda-born poacher is just 23 years old, 10 years younger than the former Newcastle United star.
So, at 33 years old, he still has a lot of upside, but it’s hard to say.
After all, it won’t be an easy deal to get over the line, but West Ham should do everything they can to sign Jorge for 2026, as he could be the perfect upgrade to Wilson.
Sullivan must be regretting not selling West Ham’s 4/10 disaster
West Ham United are on a sinking ship in the Premier League this season.
