Liverpool have not been at their best this season, but manager Arne Slott will be relieved that they have shown signs of progress throughout December, moving up to fifth in the Premier League and on a six-match unbeaten run.
However, the champions have only regained a semblance of their intimidating form from last season, running through the season with confidence and consistency and ending Manchester City’s dominance.
A drastic change in summer transfers leaves some unsatisfied, with Liverpool clearly now in the race to sign Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo.
Liverpool considering alternatives to Semenyo
Liverpool want Semenyo, but he is not the only talented winger on the market. Manager Fabrizio Romano confirmed Liverpool began talks with the Ghana international last month, but their interest has since cooled.
However, that could change after Alexander Isak is ruled out for several months after breaking his fibula in last weekend’s game against Tottenham. Furthermore, uncertainty remains over Mohamed Salah and his future at Anfield.
However, with both Manchester giants thought to be leading the race at this stage, Liverpool will always need to secure a replacement, and they have found a player who boasts an even greater talent than the Cherries star.
According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool are in talks with the agent of Real Madrid icon Vinicius Junior, who has rejected a contract extension at the Santiago Bernabéu and is set to leave next summer ahead of the expiry of his £400,000-a-week deal.
Chelsea and Manchester City are also interested, and sporting director Richard Hughes will have to put his negotiating skills to the test to secure a big deal to complete Liverpool’s front line.
But he doesn’t come cheap, with one report saying he’s worth a whopping £131m. That would make him the most expensive player in the history of the British game.
Why Vinicius Junior is Liverpool’s best left winger since Mane
The impending expiry of Vini’s contract also means that his £65m release fee is valid for the first 10 days of the January transfer window, and he could be signed for a reduced fee of £80m, which is significantly higher than Semenyo’s valuation.
Hailed as a ‘superstar’ forward by former Los Blancos teammate Luka Modric, Vinicius Junior is a rare forward who is blessed with strength, speed and an aura in the final third that can lead to trophies and important goals.
He has only scored five goals in La Liga this season but has also provided eight assists, but he contributed 41 goals in all competitions last year, playing in A-matches and finding love in the Spanish capital.
And despite the Brazilian international’s slump, he has ranked in the top 6% for shot creation actions, top 1% for progressive carries, and top 4% for takeoff success among his positionmates in Europe’s top five leagues over the past year, according to FBref.
A successful take-on is recorded when a player, while still in possession of the ball, directly carries the ball and defeats his opponent.
He would add directness and danger to Liverpool’s ranks in the slot, and the dynamism of his positioning could even allow the 25-year-old to take up the mantle as Liverpool’s new version of Sadio Mane. He was as sharp as the Reds’ knife, primarily on the left wing, but with skills that could be applied across the front line.

Mane played every game for Liverpool, scoring 120 goals in 269 games. Like Vini Jr., he boasted a wide repertoire of skills and excelled on the big stage. Both wide men starred and scored in the Champions League final.
Luis Dias was sold to Bayern Munich in August and will not be on Merseyside this season, but Mane is a year older and will be reborn as Vini rather than Semenyo.
Mane’s quick feet and constant sharpness in the final third were a crowd pleaser, and his on-field personality helped endear him to the Anfield crowd. You would think Vinicius Jr. would do the same.
Mane was a unique winger, deadly in front of goal, fierce and combative. Vinicius Junior shares some interesting traits with Jurgen Klopp’s former superstar and would be the perfect addition to improve Liverpool’s standings in 2026.
