According to recent reports, Liverpool are currently in “negotiations” to sign a replacement for Antoine Semenyo in the January transfer window.

Liverpool look set to miss out on signing Semenyo

With Mohamed Salah out for AFCON and Alexander Isak on the sidelines alongside Kodi Gakpo, Liverpool will be competing for attacking options in the new year. And in a season filled with defensive issues, the last thing Arne Slott wanted was an injury to his offensive line.

Liverpool are preparing to make a series of changes in the 2026 transfer window.

Nevertheless, it is a problem that the Dutchman will have to solve with Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards. The Premier League champions are not afraid to spend big, breaking the record twice in the summer by signing Isak and Florian Wirtz, but it looks unlikely they will bring in Antoine Semenyo next month.

Despite chasing the winger’s signature, Manchester City are currently in pole position and appear to have secured his arrival in a disappointing blow for the rest of the chasing Premier League clubs.

This leaves Liverpool back to square one, with fears that Salah’s long-term future won’t help the players at Anfield. The Egyptian departed for AFCON in a calm manner after rejoining the team, but those at Anfield will not soon forget his shocking interview.

So the Reds should be looking to kill two birds with one stone next month, and Karim Adeyemi could come in there. According to Anfield Index, Liverpool are currently in “negotiations” with his agent to sign Adeyemi and could secure his signature for as little as £20m next month.

The Borussia Dortmund star is a candidate to replace Semenyo and looks like someone who could replace Salah in the long term. At just 22 years old, it’s easy to see why he has caught the eye of those at Anfield, especially given his transfer fee of just £20 million at the start of winter.

But replacing Salah is easier said than done. Both Semenyo and Adeyemi have struggled to match the incredibly high numbers that Liverpool’s stars, particularly Dortmund’s, have produced over the years.

However, rumors that Adeyemi is being linked could suggest the Reds are moving in a different direction in the post-Salah era. Dortmund’s star represents a typical winger rather than an inside forward type, which would create room for Isak to take center stage.

Furthermore, his £85,000-a-week wage claim isn’t exactly a lot of money for Liverpool, making him the ideal option once again when 2026 arrives.
