Wedgwood Holds Strong, Defeats Avalanche-Style Mammoths 1-0

The Colorado Avalanche are set to meet the Utah Mammoth for their second matchup this season, eager to bounce back after a close 4-3 overtime loss on October 21. Though the first game wasn’t their best, the Avalanche showcased a solid overall performance and excellent goaltending from Scott Wedgewood, who helped secure a 1-0 shutout win.

In the opening period, the Avalanche struggled initially but managed to edge out the Mammoths 6-5 in shots by the 10-minute mark, creating several scoring chances despite strong defensive efforts from Utah. JJ Peterka was called for interference, but the Avalanche couldn’t capitalize on their first power play. Later, Artturi Lehkonen received a holding penalty, granting the Mammoths a power play, but Colorado’s penalty kill held firm. Martin Necas nearly scored after a sharp pass from Gabriel Landeskog, his shot barely missing the net.

Devon Toews incurred a two-minute high-sticking penalty, yet the Avalanche’s penalty kill remained resilient. Samuel Girard broke the deadlock with a backhand breakaway goal, putting Colorado up 1-0. Nathan MacKinnon was called for tripping, but the Avalanche failed to convert on their third power play chance.

Despite the 1-0 lead, the Avalanche’s play was shaky, with the Mammoths continually disrupting their rhythm. Scott Wedgewood stood as the key player by making crucial saves, including stopping Dylan Guenther on a breakaway after a tripping penalty was called against him. Soon after, Wedgewood scored on a rebound from Clayton Keller, and a late glove save kept the score at 1-0. After a video review, the goal was confirmed, as the puck had not crossed the line during the save.

While Wedgewood shone, goalie Vitek Vanecek also deserves credit for maintaining the 1-0 lead despite numerous attempts from the Mammoths. Vanecek was ejected with two minutes left in the period, but the Mammoths couldn’t find the equalizer, allowing the Avalanche to win 1-0 despite being outshot 32-26.

The Avalanche will be back on ice after the holiday break on December 27, facing off against the Las Vegas Golden Knights.

In other news, speculation is growing about Samuel Girard possibly being traded, especially with Ilya Solovyov’s recent recall from AHL conditioning, sparking questions about Colorado’s long-term strategy.

Fan Take: This matchup highlights the importance of strong goaltending and disciplined defense in tight games, which can dictate playoff success. As the Avalanche aim for redemption and refine their roster, die-hard hockey fans should watch closely, as these developments may impact the team’s future dynamics and the broader NHL landscape.
