Ian Balding, the trainer behind the 1971 Epsom Derby champion Mill Reef, has passed away at 87. Balding, who is the father of TV presenter Claire Balding, began his career as an amateur jockey, securing a win in the National Hunt Chase on Time at the 1963 Cheltenham Festival. However, he gained prominence as a trainer, running his King’s Clare stable in Newbury, where he trained multiple Group 1 winners such as Glint of Gold, Selkirk, Loch Song, and most famously, Mill Reef. The American-bred Mill Reef, ridden by jockey Jeff Lewis, claimed several prestigious victories including the Derby, Eclipse Stakes, King George VI Stakes, Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, with Balding becoming champion trainer in 1971.

Balding retired in 2002, handing over his license to his son Andrew, who has since become a multiple Classic-winning trainer. Parkhouse Stables shared their condolences on Instagram, highlighting Balding’s qualities as a wonderful family man, successful trainer, and remarkable sportsman. His daughter Claire, a noted BBC broadcaster, praised her father’s fearless, charming nature and his deep love for his dogs, horses, and family. She also expressed gratitude for the passion for sports and courage her father inspired in her.

Fan Take: Ian Balding’s legacy is deeply woven into modern horse racing history, marking an era of excellence and passion. His passing is a significant loss to the sport, but his contributions and influence through his family continue to inspire future generations of trainers and enthusiasts.
