The departure of manager Ruben Amorim this week has left the Manchester United manager’s hot seat vacant once again, with speculation mounting over who will take over the reins at Old Trafford.
Names such as Michael Carrick have been floated for the interim role, but Harry Maguire’s previous comments suggest he may already have his preferred candidate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in mind.
Appearing on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube podcast in August, the former United captain spoke about his time under the Norwegian manager and gave a glowing tribute hinting at his desire for a reunion.

Reflecting on the 2020-21 season, Maguire said he felt most comfortable with Solskjaer’s tactical set-up during his time at the club.
He praised the trio of Ole, Kieran McKenna and Michael Carrick for the way they coached the Man United team at the time.
he said:
“We couldn’t believe what happened, because obviously we finished third and second and that season, we brought in Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer, so you’d think, let’s go win the Premier League.
“And it just didn’t happen. It just didn’t click at all. And obviously losing Ole[Solskjaer]was disappointing to be honest. I felt Ole did an unbelievable job.”
“I’ll probably talk more about Ole when he retires, but the way he set us up in the first two years was probably the best I felt in the team – under Ole, Kieran (McKenna) and Carrick. Those three organized us very well.
“And like I said, we didn’t have the best team. Just well-coached, tactically good, realistic, able to play, able to press. But yeah, the third season I was there, it didn’t go well.”

According to the latest reports, it looks like Maguire’s wish is about to come true. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly close to making a sensational return to Manchester United as caretaker manager until the end of the season.
Club executives approached changing room executives about the appointment.
Harry Maguire and captain Bruno Fernandes have reportedly given their approval for Solskjaer’s return.
A final decision has not yet been taken, but it is likely that Ole will make an emotional return to Old Trafford as caretaker manager.
With Solskjaer reportedly keen to take on the challenge and key players backing the move, it looks like the Norwegian legend will be back at the wheel.
