Candace Parker Reflects on the ‘Aha’ Moment with Aja Wilson That Sparked Her Retirement: “I’m Not the Allen Iverson of the Pistons”

The end of a basketball career doesn’t happen overnight. For most players, especially stars, the transition is slow and can be met with acceptance, resistance by holding on to limited roles, or eventual fading from the sport’s spotlight.

Some players, however, embrace the reality that younger talent is taking over. This was evident in 2023 when Candice Parker joined the Las Vegas Aces and recognized that A’ja Wilson was the new star leading the team.

Parker talked about the changes in mindset throughout a player’s career as an “arc of humility.” Early on, players are confident and perhaps overestimate their abilities. Mid-career brings more self-awareness, though they still strive to be the best. Toward the end, a critical choice emerges: to honestly assess one’s capabilities or continue living with a false sense of self, she shared on the All the Smoke podcast.

After a highly acclaimed career, Parker took on a smaller role with the reigning champions, the Aces, before a foot injury cut her season short. Meanwhile, Wilson was coming off an MVP season and was clearly the team’s leader and arguably the best player in the league.

Parker said joining the Aces helped her realize she’s more than just basketball and acknowledged she wasn’t the same dominant player she once was. She admitted playing basketball is more enjoyable when you’re a team’s primary ball handler and didn’t want to stretch her career in a way that would be unhappy for herself or others. Watching Wilson’s rise and supporting her growth was a joyful experience for Parker.

Despite the shortened season and missing the playoffs, Parker earned her third WNBA championship. She feels this title is just as meaningful as her previous ones, teaching her that she can move forward with acceptance and let go of the past. Acknowledging her legacy as one of the greatest players, Parker chose to protect it by making this mature decision.

She retired in 2024 and has since transitioned to a successful career as an NBA and WNBA analyst.

Fan Take: This story is important for WNBA fans because it highlights the graceful transition of legends out of the spotlight while embracing new stars, which is vital for the league’s evolving narrative. It shows a mature perspective on career longevity and legacy, inspiring both current players and fans about the sport’s future growth.
