‘What were you thinking?’ – Neville pinpoints the moment that didn’t go well for Amorim at Man United

Manchester United legend Gary Neville believes the recent home draw with Wolves may have been one of the big moments in Ruben Amorim’s reign.

Amorim was sacked by Man United over a week ago and the Red Devils have brought in former player Michael Carrick as interim manager until the end of the season.

Neville reflected on what went wrong with Amorim at Old Trafford and felt the Portuguese tactician’s return to the 3-4-3 formation he trusted against Wolves caused problems for himself.

Amorim had shown positive signs of moving away from that tactical set-up, but then reverted back to it and ended up playing with three centre-backs against the worst team in the Premier League.

Speaking on the latest episode of Overlap, Neville felt it was then that the United bosses would start asking serious questions of Mr Amorim.

“I think every football club, sporting director and manager will have a weekly meeting and either reflect on the week or reflect on the performance of the last game,” Neville said. “That’s a must in the meeting, that’s what happens at every club.

“You never expected the sporting director to say after the Wolves game: ‘What were you thinking then? Why did you go back to your old job? Why did you play with a back three against Wolves when it was clear you didn’t need a back three?’

“You know, he has a right to ask that question.”

Neville went on to say that there were other easy-looking games against Wolves that gave Amorim big chances but ultimately missed them.

MUFC currently have just one win in their last seven games and Carrick will be in charge of this weekend’s first game, the Manchester derby against rivals Manchester City.
