Where have Manchester United been so far?
It was as comprehensive a victory as we have seen in the Premier League this season. Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City were left in tatters as they were blown away by a masterclass from new caretaker manager Michael Carrick.
City thought ahead and fought proactively. They had no answer to the home team’s intensity. A penny for Reuben Amorim’s thoughts. The recently sacked Portuguese manager must be troubled by the display, his project being a far cry from the classic ferocity we’ve just witnessed.
It has certainly been a tough season for the Red Devils, but United’s victory enabled them to overturn fourth-placed Liverpool ahead of a home game against struggling champions Burnley, with many of Carrick’s stars repaying their faith with great efforts.
Manchester United’s best derby player
Where do you start if you don’t start with Koby Mainu, who was kicked out of the game under Amorim but proved against City that he has what it takes to become Manchester United’s mainstay?
Hailed by one content creator as a “special jewel in the footballing world”, the England international is only 20 years old but will no doubt get plenty of playing time in the future, hopefully reinforcing the midfield and allowing captain Bruno Fernandes to play more regularly.
Brian Mbeumo and Patrick Dorg scored the goals. In particular, he has struggled to achieve the latter since he moved to England from Lecce in Serie A, but according to Sofascore, he showed incredible performance during his playing days, winning 10 duels and recovering the ball nine times in an unnatural left-wing position.
Carrick also deserves credit for being the engineer of this strong, balanced line-up, getting much more out of his players on an afternoon than his predecessors, against elite opponents.
The United legend rallied the club, but not everyone agreed with him and one star showed he was a weak link and needed to be sacked from now on.
Why Carrick needs to drop Manchester United’s bad players immediately
Man United dismantled their troublesome neighbours, but things could have gone very differently had Diogo Dalot been given his marching orders after his reckless challenge early on.
The burly player has been struggling for some time, but there is no doubt he could have breathed a sigh of relief after Amorim’s sacking and reverted to a more traditional back four.
The truth is that Dalot was certainly lucky to still be on the pitch after missing the ball on a stud-up challenge in the first half and finding Jeremy Doku’s knee. Dalot’s poor timing saved him, as his “glance” contact was deemed not aggressive enough to avoid a red card.
But that wasn’t all. Dalot missed a simple pass at half-time and over-hit the ball to Amad Diallo as he slipped into space on the right.
The Portugal international will be congratulating United on such a strong performance. A loss in Carrick’s first game back in the dugout would have provoked a violent reaction from a desperate and demoralized fan base.

Defensively, Dalot did his part for the most part. However, the 26-year-old struggled to handle the ball well, which was a notable weakness, with GOAL giving him a 5/10 rating.
They were weak in possession, never creating any chances, never dribbling and still losing the ball on average every 3.7 touches.
Just over a year ago, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher called Dalot a “huge problem” in Amorim’s team. He was deemed unsuitable for a back five set-up.
Man Utd seem to have turned a corner now, but the £85,000-a-week defender has simply not shown he has what it takes to emerge alongside his team-mates and should be sacked for that.
Deserves more than Semenyo: Manchester United’s ‘monster’ is perfect for Carrick
Manchester United face Antoine Semenyo in a derby that will be Michael Carrick’s first test.
