  • Blues plan to rebuild squad in summer

Chelsea could be gearing up for one of their biggest transfer decisions, with TEAMtalk reporting that the club are open to selling World Cup-winning midfielder Enzo Fernandes if a suitable bid comes in this summer.

The 25-year-old Argentina international joined Chelsea for a then-UK record fee of £106.8 million in January 2023 and is one of the club’s most influential players, having worn the captain’s armband on multiple occasions.

However, sources say that despite his importance, he is not considered “untouchable” in the next stage of Chelsea’s team’s evolution.

Chelsea promotes openness through intermediaries

Chelsea have not officially added Fernandes to their transfer list, but mediators have reportedly told major European clubs, including Real Madrid, that the Blues are willing to negotiate if they receive a “huge offer”.

Chelsea are expected to consider bids that exceed their initial investment of £106.8m. Club owners want flexibility to regroup their squads in the summer.

Possible interest from Madrid could move the deal forward for a record move in La Liga, but it remains to be seen whether the Spanish giants are willing to invest a record sum on the midfielder.

Real Madrid are said to be aware of Fernandes’ situation and are closely monitoring his developments.

Chelsea’s long-term team-building strategy has shifted to reducing personnel costs, staying safe within financial sustainability rules, paving the way for other midfielders, and funding the transfer of new strikers and centre-backs.

Fernandes is highly regarded internally for his leadership, technical qualities and mentality, but club executives believe the nine-figure offer could be reinvested more effectively into multiple positions.

The midfielder is rated as the team’s “leader” by former manager Enzo Maresca, who always showed faith in the midfielder and his abilities.

As well as Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich have also been linked with a move for the Chelsea star.
