  • Ruben Neves wants to return to Premier League
  • Man United need fresh legs in midfield

Ruben Neves has emerged as a genuine late-game opportunity for Manchester United, with Football Insider reporting that the Al Hilal midfielder is open to a return to the Premier League.

The 28-year-old’s representatives have reportedly initiated contact with United, suggesting the player is keen on a potential move to Old Trafford before the January deadline closes.

Sources say Neves is interested in potentially joining Man United as the club carefully considers its options following a change in manager.

United have publicly insisted they are unlikely to spend in January, but the approach from Neves’ camp has forced an internal debate over whether things need to change.

Ruben Neves wants to return to Premier League

Neves, who left Wolves to join Saudi Pro League giants Al Hilal in the summer of 2023, has demonstrated deep-rooted playmaking qualities that have made him one of the Premier League’s most reliable midfielders, and he continues to perform at a high level in Riyadh.

Prior to his move to Saudi Arabia, Neves was widely regarded as one of the most technically gifted midfielders in the league. He appeared in more than 250 games in six years with the Wolves.

He also maintains a strong presence in the Portuguese national team, regularly featuring in the squad for major tournaments.

That pedigree makes him an attractive short-term and potentially medium-term solution for United’s midfield, which has struggled for consistency and depth.

Casemiro’s form has slumped and Manuel Ugarte has yet to establish himself as a long-term solution.

Bruno Fernandes often carries much of the creative burden alone, so adding a control midfielder with Premier League experience could provide important balance.

For United, the big question remains timing. The club’s board has emphasized a disciplined approach to spending in January and hopes to wait until the summer before making any major moves once a permanent manager is appointed.

However, the combination of Neves’ availability, Premier League history and clear interest in joining him could mean United make a move sooner than planned.

The attacker’s contract will be terminated in January after Man United refused to force a transfer.
