Glasgow Rangers head coach Danny Rohr has added three players to his squad so far in the January transfer window, including Andreas Skov-Olsen, Toti Chukwani and Tuul Romans.
The trio were announced before last week’s 5-0 win over Annan Athletic in the SFA Cup, but will not be included in the squad for Thursday night’s Europa League.
The Light Blues may have more work to do before the end of the season, but work is also being done to get the squad into shape in the coming days.
The Daily Mail reported that the Gers are looking to “release” Danilo, Nedim Bajrami, Kieran Dewell, Ravi Matondo, Clinton Ciara and Joe Rothwell this month.
It will take effort on the part of the club to part ways with all of these players before the window slams shut on February 2nd, but progress is being made in that regard.
Kieran Dowell to leave Rangers
A new update regarding Kieran Dowell and his future at Ibrox has been revealed. His contract with the club expires at the end of the 2025/26 season.
According to HullLive, Championship side Hull City have agreed to sign the English attacking midfielder from Glasgow Rangers in the January transfer window.
According to the paper, the left-footed attacker is set to sign a permanent contract with England, who are looking to strengthen their attacking midfield position.
The Tigers have said they are ready to finalize Dowell’s move permanently, but HullLive has not revealed whether the club plans to pay a fee for the player, whose contract expires in the summer.
Either way, the 28-year-old’s failure is set to end his two-and-a-half year stay at Ibrox, where he joined on a free transfer from Norwich City in the summer of 2023.
Midfielder Rangers should sign instead of Dowell
It has been reported that a transfer target could be the perfect option for Danny Rolle if Rangers decide to re-enter the market to add a midfielder to their squad to replace Dowell.
The Light Blues were reported to be interested in Tromsø central midfielder Jens Herdt-Dahl late last month, with a £5 million transfer fee mentioned.
According to Transfermarkt, Dowell played 39 games in all competitions during his time with Gyor, scoring three goals and providing three assists, while Geert-Dahl played in 30 games for Eliteserien in the 2025 season, scoring four goals and providing seven assists.
These statistics suggest that the Tromsø star, who was described as a “sensation” by journalist Pete O’Rourke, has the qualities to become an even bigger threat at the top end of the pitch if he can carry his form into Scottish football.
Kai Watson of Rangers Journal claimed that it would be a “huge coup” for the club to sign the 20-year-old talent, but when you combine his offensive threat with his defensive stats, it’s easy to see why that opinion is justified.

As can be seen from the table above, Geert Dahl is one of the best central midfielders in the Norwegian top flight in a number of important defensive and physical metrics, showing that he can excel at both ends of the pitch.
This is in stark contrast to Dowell, who has lost 62% of his duels in the league this season and 54% of his duels in the 2024-25 Scottish Premiership season, according to Sofascore, suggesting the £5m-rated talent will bring much more to the team when in possession.
This means that Geert Dahl could be a significant upgrade to Dowell in the left central midfield or number 10 position in Rohr’s 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation. Because he has the potential to not only provide more goals and assists, but also significantly contribute to the team defensively.
The 20-year-old Norwegian youth international is eight years younger than England’s failed player and will be given time to settle in and develop as a player over the coming months.
Best commercial since Aribo: Rangers want to sign SPFL’s ‘best midfielder’
Rangers are reportedly interested in signing the star player who could be the best central midfielder since Joe Aribo.
Geert Dahl could therefore be the perfect signing to replace Dowell this month, taking on a role in the team with a view to increasing in importance as he develops, so they need to move towards their reported targets in the coming days.
