When Spurs find themselves in a hole, they can always rely on two players to get them out: center-back duo Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.

Don’t get me wrong, Saturday’s 2-2 draw between Tottenham Hotspur and Burnley was abysmal and it means Thomas Frank’s position as manager is now under even more scrutiny.

That said, amidst the injury crisis, it was pleasing from a Lilywhites’ point of view that two of the team’s most consistent players rose to the occasion once again.

Romero is often seen as a pantomime villain, but there’s no denying that the Argentine is no warrior. He is also contributing to some very important goals. His last-minute header at Turf Moor at least gave the visitors a point, but it may be too late considering Frank’s future.

At least efforts are being made to improve the team off the pitch as well. Conor Gallagher has arrived, but he may not be the only breakthrough addition as we approach the final week of the window.

Spurs transfer status

Gallagher’s arrival will no doubt strengthen their midfield, but as 2026 builds momentum, Spurs are eyeing other irons, particularly Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton.

He is reported to be Tottenham’s dream target, but is unlikely to move this winter and would have to wait until the summer to make a move.

Wharton is not the only Premier League talent who could be heading in the direction of north London, alongside Liverpool’s Andy Robertson.

Reports a few days ago revealed that Spurs are interested and want a deal to be agreed by the Monday February 2nd deadline.

Arne Slott is reluctant to lose a left-back midway through the season, but every player comes at a cost, and this could be an opportunity for Liverpool to recoup money from a player they will lose on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of the season.

According to the Daily Mail, negotiations are in full swing between Spurs and Liverpool officials, with the terms of a £5m package currently being discussed.

It has been said that a decision on the Scotland international’s future at Anfield will be reached “within the next few days”.

The paper notes that following Gallagher’s arrival, the Lilywhites are looking to add further experience to their squad.

Why Robertson should sign with Spurs

At 31 years old and in the twilight of his career, this may be a strange sign on paper.

After all, Spurs recently signed 19-year-old Souza from Brazil and also have Destiny Udogi and Jed Spence available to play in that position.

But Souza will need time to adapt after leaving his homeland. Spence, on the other hand, is not a natural left-back, and Udogi has missed large parts of this season with injury. Another option, Ben Davis, also recently underwent ankle surgery.

As a result, moving Robertson quickly would certainly make a lot of sense. The Scot is one of the most decorated full-backs in English football, having won every category of silverware during his time at Anfield.

The two-time Premier League winner and Champions League winner will bring experience to Frank’s side, which is currently lacking.

Sure, he’s getting a little better with age, but there’s no substitute for his experience and he could be a game-changer as the club looks to finally drop the ‘Spacy’ tagline.

There’s nothing Spurs-like about Robertson. He will be a consistent performer and will bring great leadership not only to the backline but to the entire team.

The Liverpool full-back, who is the current captain of his country, brings important leadership qualities to the team and could realistically become Spurs’ next captain.

Romero is a warrior at the back of Spurs’ defense, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Argentine take some time off before too long. After all, Real Madrid have been linked with the centre-back for some time and could finally make a move in the summer.

With his improved defense, goalscoring ability and plenty of leadership, it’s easy to see why Real would be interested in bringing him to the Spanish capital this year.

As a result, bringing in Robertson makes more sense. This team is young and lacks players who can be captains.

You could also identify players like Van de Ven or Gallagher as potential options, but that aside, there aren’t that many candidates. With only two players in Spurs’ current squad over the age of 30 – Davies and Joao Parinha – Robertson will immediately join the team as one of the most experienced heads in the dressing room.

Of course, a £5m move for a player in his 30s isn’t the most awe-inspiring move for Spurs, but given their current predicament it could be a game-changer.

Tottenham may have their future captain waiting here.
