Israel Adesanya Calls Justin Gaethje vs. Paddy Pimblett ‘The Most Pivotal Fight in UFC History’

Former UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya has expressed that the matchup between Justin Gaethje and Paddy Pimblett was an ideal way to kick off a new chapter in the UFC’s journey.

The promotion’s first event of the year—and the first under its new partnership with Paramount—featured Gaethje and Pimblett battling for the interim lightweight belt in UFC 324’s headliner. After an intense five-round contest, Gaethje, also known as “The Highlight,” secured a unanimous decision victory. Adesanya praised the fight, likening it to one of the most thrilling clashes in UFC history.

When the fight was first announced by Dana White, many fans criticized the matchup, mainly because Pimblett had yet to defeat any current top-10 fighters. Even post-fight, UFC legend Josh Barnett labeled the bout as “one of the worst main events,” despite its high intensity. However, Adesanya drew parallels between Gaethje vs. Pimblett and the legendary 2005 bout between Stephen Bonnar and Forrest Griffin—the Ultimate Fighter 1 finals fight White called “the most important fight in UFC history,” a bout credited with significantly boosting the UFC’s popularity.

Adesanya remarked on YouTube that Pimblett showed incredible resilience, comparing the recent main event to the Bonnar-Griffin fight and suggesting this new fight symbolized the start of Paramount’s era with similarly profound impact. He believes this match will generate considerable attention and set the tone for upcoming major events under the new distribution deal.

Looking ahead, Gaethje, the first-ever two-time interim lightweight champion, will face undisputed champion Islam Makhachev to unify the title. Pimblett, meanwhile, will likely need to build his resume with more victories before earning another shot at a title. Given Pimblett’s ongoing rivalry with fellow lightweight Dan Hooker, many expect those two to clash next, no matter the outcome of Hooker’s upcoming bout with Benoit Saint-Denis at UFC 325.

Fan Take: This news highlights how pivotal matchups not only shape fighters’ careers but also influence the trajectory of the UFC itself, especially as it embarks on a new era with Paramount. Gaethje vs. Pimblett’s exciting display and the comparisons to UFC history’s most iconic fights remind fans that the sport continues to evolve, promising thrilling moments and fresh rivalries ahead.
