Artemi Panarin Trade Buzz: Six Top Destinations for the Rangers’ Star Winger

Artemi Panarin appears to have played what could be his final game with the New York Rangers. According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, the team plans to hold off on re-signing him until February 6th to explore potential trades, provided no deal is finalized before then. This development isn’t entirely unexpected, as Rangers GM Chris Drury recently indicated their intention to retool the roster. Panarin, a 34-year-old pending free agent who recently achieved 120 points two seasons ago, is likely to command a substantial contract in the future. The Rangers have adjusted their plans accordingly, which could indicate a willingness to move on from the veteran winger.

Panarin remains a high-caliber offensive player, leading the team with 38 assists and 57 points this season. Since debuting in 2015-16, only four players have amassed more than Panarin’s 927 career points, underscoring his elite status in the league. Any team acquiring him would be getting a top-tier winger capable of making a significant impact. However, his high cap hit of $11.6 million through the 2025-26 season, combined with his impending free agency, makes a lucrative return unlikely unless he extends his contract. The financial considerations and potential lack of a large return may limit the offers for Panarin unless a team is willing to pay a premium.

Despite these challenges, Panarin would be an attractive addition for many playoff-contending teams, especially with the trade deadline approaching on March 6th. Several franchises could benefit from his offensive skills and leadership.

The Anaheim Ducks, currently climbing the standings and possessing both young talent and draft capital, are an intriguing suitor. Positioned third in the Pacific Division, the Ducks could use Panarin’s scoring punch to bolster their lineup, particularly supporting star center Leo Karlsson. The team’s expected cap space of about $40 million next offseason could enable them to make a serious bid for Panarin, adding an experienced scorer to their roster.

Meanwhile, the Carolina Hurricanes need offensive firepower to push further in the playoffs. Panarin could provide a crucial boost as a top-line scorer, helping the Hurricanes overcome their recent playoff setbacks and challenge other Eastern Conference contenders. With no immediate cap restrictions this season, a trade and subsequent extension could be feasible, aiming for a deep postseason run.

In Detroit, Steve Yzerman’s rebuild seems to be coming together, with hopes of challenging for the division title. Adding Panarin could provide the Red Wings with a skilled playmaker supporting emerging stars like Seider and Raymond. They have around $35 million in cap space to work with, making a move for Panarin a real possibility for boosting their offensive depth.

The Florida Panthers, often linked with big-name trades, could also be interested. Injuries have hampered their offensive output this season, and Panarin could help alleviate some of that pressure, especially if captain Aleksander Barkov returns later in the playoffs. Given Florida’s tight cap situation and limited draft capital, any deal might involve aggressive asset exchanges, potentially including players like Anton Randle, to make the numbers work.

Other teams like the Los Angeles Kings and Washington Capitals could also pursue Panarin. For the Kings, he could address their scoring struggles and rejuvenate their playoff hopes, especially if paired with young talent like Quinton Byfield. The Capitals might look to reunite Panarin with Ovechkin, adding offensive firepower needed to contend in the loaded Eastern Conference, though financial maneuvering would be necessary.

Fan Take: The potential trade of Panarin is a game-changer, as it could reshape multiple playoff races and give fans new storylines to follow. It underscores the unpredictable and dynamic nature of the NHL deadline, where star power often shifts the balance of power and energizes the sport’s passionate fanbase.
