Jacob Wilson, All-Star Shortstop, Secures $70 Million Deal in Seven-Year Contract with Athletics

The Athletics have made significant progress in shaping a possible lineup for the 2028 season opener in Las Vegas by signing All-Star shortstop Jacob Wilson to a $70 million, seven-year deal on Friday. This contract secures Wilson through the 2032 season, with an additional club option for 2033.

By finalizing the deal now, the Athletics avoid salary arbitration for Wilson after the 2027, 2028, and 2029 seasons. Wilson was also on track to be a free agent following the 2030 World Series. A press conference to officially sign the contract is scheduled for Monday in Las Vegas.

At just 22 years old, Wilson becomes the fourth player the Athletics have committed to through at least 2028, coinciding with the opening of their new stadium on the Las Vegas Strip. The team, traditionally cautious with spending, has made several notable signings recently, including an $86 million, seven-year contract with left fielder Tyler Soderstrom, a $60 million, five-year deal with designated hitter/outfielder Brent Rooker, and a $65.5 million, seven-year contract with outfielder Lawrence Butler. Soderstrom’s contract is now the highest in franchise history.

Meanwhile, Manager Mark Kossais has extended his contract through 2028, with a club option for 2029. This offseason, the Athletics also acquired veteran second baseman Jeff McNeil from the New York Mets. For the next two seasons, the team will play at a Triple-A stadium located in West Sacramento, California.

Wilson had an impressive season last year, batting .311 with 13 home runs and 63 RBIs. He became the first fan-elected rookie starting shortstop in the All-Star Game and finished second in the American League Rookie of the Year voting behind unanimous winner and teammate Nick Kurtz. The Athletics originally drafted Wilson with the sixth overall pick in the 2023 amateur draft.
