  • Liverpool have already started negotiations to sign Geertruida.
  • Arne Slott knows the Dutch defender well

Liverpool’s late transfer window activity appears to be picking up pace, with the club stepping up efforts to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the deadline.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Reds are in active negotiations to sign Lutcharel Geertruida, a player well known to head coach Arne Slott after his successful spell at Feyenoord.

Liverpool’s renewed interest is closely linked to the current injury situation. With Jeremy Frimpong out and Conor Bradley out until the end of the season, depth in wide defensive areas is an immediate concern.

Such circumstances led to Liverpool entering the market, and Geertruida quickly emerged as a leading candidate due to both availability and tactical suitability.

Liverpool have already started negotiations to sign Geertruida.

According to Romano, Liverpool are already in talks between the clubs, with the first communication being made about a possible postponement, which could be completed before Monday’s deadline.

Negotiations are still ongoing, but the closeness between Mr Slott and Mr Giltruida is believed to be a key factor in moving negotiations forward.

The Dutch manager had great faith in Geertruida during his time in Rotterdam, using him as a versatile defensive option who can play right-back, centre-back or a hybrid role depending on the system.

Geertruida spent the first six years of his professional career at Feyenoord, three of which were under Slott’s guidance.

During this period, he developed into one of the most reliable defenders in the Eredivisie and played a key role in the 2022/23 season, when Feyenoord won the title.

His tactical discipline, comfort in possession and ability to enter midfield in the build-up phase align closely with slot football principles.

However, the situation this season is not so simple. Geertruida is currently on loan from RB Leipzig with an option to buy, and has also impressed at Sunderland.

He has appeared in 17 games so far this season. From Liverpool’s perspective, this is a move shaped as much by necessity as it is by opportunity.

The club needs a reliable, tactically smart defender who can be brought in quickly, and with Slott’s support, a deal could easily be completed.
