Mercedes’ promising young driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli emphasizes the need for racers to be both “open-minded” and “creative” when competing with the new 2026 Formula 1 cars. The extensive rule overhaul for 2026 has sparked numerous questions about the impact these changes will have on racing dynamics.

Following the recent car shakedown in Barcelona, many drivers felt initial concerns had eased somewhat, but fresh challenges have emerged, such as how to efficiently manage energy during qualifying sessions and navigating increasingly intricate on-track battles. Even reigning world champion Lando Norris conceded that racing in 2026 could become a “mess,” particularly with the complexity surrounding battery power management.

Antonelli compares the upcoming races to a game of chess, requiring drivers to think multiple moves ahead. “Managing this amount of energy while racing is a huge leap,” he explained at a Mercedes media event. “This year, we need to enter the season with a very open mind and be quite inventive, because when you’re competing against others, you can play with energy management—it’s almost like chess. But it’s fast chess, so there’s limited time to consider each move. You always have to be two steps ahead, especially when overtaking or defending, to predict your opponent or force their hand. That’s why creativity and flexibility will be essential this season.”

Antonelli, now in his second year driving Grand Prix-level machinery across F4, Formula Regional, F2, and F1 categories since 2022, feels that younger drivers like himself are better positioned to quickly adapt to the new regulations. He pointed out that rookies who debuted last year in F1 are accustomed to switching cars annually, giving them an advantage when it comes to mastering the 2026 car’s demands. “For those of us used to a new car every year, this reset is beneficial,” he said. “It might help us grasp the car’s behavior faster than with previous models. But, of course, the experienced drivers are sharp too, and I’m sure they’ll catch on swiftly.”
