Khabib Nurmagomedov’s Cousin Warns Next Opponent Will Face “Punishment” Over Allegations of Being a “Known Drug Fraudster”

The undefeated champion’s upcoming opponent is struggling to accept the praise he’s been getting from his rivals.

Khabib Nurmagomedov triumphed over Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 and chose to retire while still at the peak of his career, following the death of his father and coach. Known as “The Eagle,” Khabib is undoubtedly one of the most dominant figures in MMA history, and his guidance has helped his team continue to achieve remarkable results. While Nurmagomedov believes Islam Makhachev will retire soon, another fighter is emerging with the potential for a long and successful career.

Alfie Davies, who stunned many by defeating Gazi Rabadanov last August to claim the PFL Lightweight World Tournament, is now gearing up to face another member of Khabib’s team. Nurmagomedov has spoken highly of his cousin Usman Nurmagomedov ahead of Usman’s lightweight title defense on February 7 in Dubai. However, Davies has expressed frustration with the overwhelming praise given to the undefeated 27-year-old, especially in light of allegations surrounding the integrity of Dagestani fighters.

In an interview with MMA Fighting, Davies remarked, “It bothers me a little that people keep talking about how great Dagestanis are. They have excellent technique, but there’s a history of drug cheating with them. It’s concerning that Usman is both famous as a drug cheat and celebrated as a great fighter.” Usman’s only mark on his record was a no-contest in 2023 due to testing positive for a banned substance, which led to a six-month suspension. Nevertheless, he retained his title as the substance was deemed to have been taken accidentally via prescription medication.

Davies insists that Khabib should return from retirement to defeat the entire team, highlighting that he is undaunted by the prospect of taking on his next opponent’s close-knit group. “They’ve been cheating for a while, and I feel like I’m going to punish them for that,” he added. “They deserve to be punished, and I need to punish Usman.”

This discussion also ties into a larger debate about how a fighter’s history with drug testing can affect their standing in the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) conversation. Davies questioned, “How can you be considered the GOAT in a sport that’s supposed to be clean?” While some veterans argue that previous eras had laxer testing standards and that their achievements remain valid, this controversy continues to divide opinion about disqualifying fighters with tainted records from GOAT consideration. Davies has clearly taken a stance, asserting that Usman Nurmagomedov does not merit the level of acclaim he currently enjoys.

Fan Take: This storyline highlights the ongoing tension between lineage, legacy, and legitimacy in MMA. For fans, it underscores the importance of clean competition and how unresolved controversies can shape the future narratives of rising stars and champions in the sport.
