Minnesota United has announced the signing of international star James Rodriguez, who will begin his debut season in Major League Soccer (MLS). Notably, Rodriguez will not take up a designated player slot, and his contract is a short-term agreement set to last until at least the World Cup. The Colombian midfielder joined Minnesota as a free agent after leaving Liga MX’s Leon in December.

A Star Joins the Ranks

Rodriguez’s signing represents a significant move for head coach Cameron Knowles, bringing both creativity and flair to the midfield. The former Real Madrid player has inked a temporary deal with the Loons, who finished fourth in the Western Conference last season but were ousted in the conference semifinals.

When reflecting on his choice to join Minnesota over more prominent MLS teams, Rodriguez stated, “This is the club that has made the most progress and is the club that wants me.” He emphasized the necessity of committing fully to the club: “When people need you, you have to give everything for them.”

Rodriguez also mentioned, “I’m at a unique and important stage in my career. I can’t afford to fail because I have the World Cup ahead of me. It’s a key reason I’m here, and I aim to perform at my best for Minnesota.”

Interestingly, Minnesota United was one of the teams with the lowest possession stats in the league last season. However, the addition of Rodriguez could alter that dynamic, given his extensive experience with elite clubs like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Monaco, Porto, and Everton.

James’ Journey to MLS

Interest in the midfielder was shown by several clubs, including Ecuador’s Liga de Quito and Barcelona SC, as well as Banfield. Ultimately, Rodriguez opted for MLS to position himself optimally for the World Cup, which will see Colombia compete against Uzbekistan, Portugal, and a team emerging from a playoff involving Jamaica, Congo, and New Caledonia.

“I come from a very physical league (Liga MX),” he said. Reflecting on his experiences, Rodriguez noted playing against MLS teams last year during the League Cup and acknowledged the physical nature of the league. He added that adapting to new rules and styles is a necessary process, but one that becomes easier with improvement.

“I wanted to play in this league, and after a long negotiation, I am here. When there’s belief in you, you have to give your all for everyone. I want to win.”

Rodriguez hinted about potentially extending his stay in MLS, stating, “The contract is initially for six months with an option for another six months, but many factors could influence this.” He mentioned the possibility of extending beyond a year, especially after the World Cup.

Third Signing for the 2026 MLS Season

With Rodriguez’s addition, Minnesota United also welcomes forward Marcus Caldeira, who signed a one-year deal through 2026, and Mauricio Gonzalez from Colombian club Deportes Tolima. This shift occurs as Knowles takes the reins following Eric Ramsey’s departure to the EFL Championship.

What’s Next for MNUFC?

Minnesota United kicks off their season on February 21st against Austin FC.

Fan Take: This signing is significant as it shows the growing appeal of MLS to high-profile players, which could enhance the league’s competitiveness and visibility. For soccer fans, Rodriguez’s presence could usher in an exciting chapter for Minnesota United and the league, as star power often raises the profile of teams and the sport as a whole.
