The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office said Friday that former NFL linebacker Daron Lee has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his girlfriend. He also faces a charge of tampering with evidence.
Lee, 31, was identified as the suspect and taken into custody at the scene Thursday after officers responded to a residence in Ooltewah, Tennessee. First responders found the victim and attempted lifesaving measures, but the person was later pronounced dead. Authorities indicated additional charges could follow as the investigation continues. Inmate records show Lee is being held in the Hamilton County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 11.
Lee was the New York Jets’ first-round pick (20th overall) in the 2016 NFL Draft. He also spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs (2019) and Buffalo Bills (2020), and signed with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2021 but was placed on injured reserve before appearing in any games that season. In college, Lee was a key player for Ohio State’s defense during their run to the 2014 national championship.
In 2023, Lee was arrested on allegations of assault and domestic violence; the arrest report said he shoved the woman, threw her to the floor and struck her in the face and head multiple times with a closed fist.
