Denny Hamlin Suffers Setback as Winter Strains Repaired Shoulder Once Again

Denny Hamlin is currently not at his full strength following a challenging and emotional off-season, and it may take until after the 2026 season for him to fully recover. During the winter, Hamlin suffered a tragic loss when his father died in a house fire, his mother was hospitalized, and he sustained a re-injury to his right shoulder—previously operated on after the 2023 season—due to a fall while inspecting the damaged home he had bought for his parents.

This injury happened late in the offseason, preventing Hamlin from having surgery early enough to race Joe Gibbs Racing’s No. 11 car, meaning he will need to manage this condition until the next offseason in November. Adding to his difficulties was a devastating defeat in the NASCAR Cup Series championship at Phoenix, where he led much of the race but was overtaken by Kyle Larson during a caution and restart incident, costing him the title.

Hamlin later initiated antitrust lawsuits on behalf of Front Row Motorsports and 23XI Racing, co-owned by Michael Jordan, against NASCAR, which were settled shortly after. Reflecting on his situation, Hamlin acknowledged the hardships but stressed that everyone faces personal struggles, and such experiences build character by shaping how people respond to adversity.

He has scheduled surgery for shortly after the 2026 season and will require recovery time until November, noting that although his injury isn’t as severe as at the end of 2023, it remains fragile and needs to be carefully managed to prevent worsening. Hamlin admitted that this season could be either very successful or very difficult, depending on how things unfold and his ability to focus on his recovery and career goals.

With a career spanning 721 starts and 60 wins in the top tier, Hamlin’s dedication to fitness and race preparation is well-established, yet he remains uncertain about when he will finally process all that has happened emotionally and physically. Nonetheless, he is committed to giving his team the best possible support on race weekends, emphasizing his responsibility to deliver strong results after all their hard work.

Fan Take:
This update on Denny Hamlin highlights the human side of NASCAR stars—showing that off-track challenges can profoundly impact even the sport’s top competitors. How Hamlin manages his recovery and comeback could inspire fans and influence the competitive landscape in the coming years, proving resilience is as crucial as speed in racing.
