Undefeated Champ Promises to Push Conor McGregor’s Former Rival to the Brink of Retirement

Following some intense verbal exchanges, the upcoming showdown between the two fighters has turned into a heated rivalry.

Israel Adesanya recently opened up about his thoughts on retirement, acknowledging that while the end of his career feels near, he’s uncertain exactly how much longer he plans to compete. The former two-time UFC middleweight champion is already considered a legend in MMA, but his recent string of losses has led many to question how much more he has left to give. Just this past weekend, fans called on the celebrated veteran to retire after a tough defeat at Meta Apex. Meanwhile, one fighter believes he will force Adesanya’s hand when they meet on February 13th.

Diego Brandao, who won “The Ultimate Fighter,” saw his UFC run conclude in 2016 after facing top names like Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier. Although he went winless in six consecutive fights afterward, the seasoned Brazilian has recently found new momentum with three straight victories at Tough ‘N’ Aff. Now, at 38, Brandao takes on Shazaib Lind this Friday at Karate Combat 59, sharing the card with the bout between Balter Walker and Zion Clark.

Shazaib Lind — undefeated as the lightweight champion in Karate Combat — took offense when Brandao was called “young” ahead of their matchup. The 27-year-old contender told Bloody Elbow, “I was offended by those words. After this fight, he’ll be begging to retire, because he’ll see what it’s like to face a real young man and how tough the competition is nowadays.” Lind is confident this fight will show Brandao the harsh realities of the modern fight game.

Before agreeing to face Brandao, Lind was originally set to fight former UFC lightweight Natan Levy. He noted to Bloody Elbow that the bout with Levy is still on the docket, highlighting that he’s faced Levy four times in the Octagon. Lind, primarily a striking specialist, envisions these bouts as stepping stones toward his goal of transitioning fully into MMA. He stated, “Once I beat these top-level fighters, the world will know my true skill level, and I will only want to face the best — that’s my plan, to make the move to MMA eventually.”

Fan Take: This developing rivalry and Lind’s MMA ambitions highlight the evolving nature of combat sports, where fighters are constantly seeking new challenges and growth. For fans, these storylines bring added intrigue and set the stage for exciting cross-discipline action that could reshape the future of both MMA and hybrid fighting promotions.
