Brian Ortega Reveals How Final UFC KO “Woke Me Up”: “I Believe in The Meme”

Brian Ortega expressed his dissatisfaction with Diego Lopez’s strategy in their recent fight. Ortega, a top contender who previously faced champions like Alexander Volkanovsky and Max Holloway and experienced his first career knockout loss last year, was looking to get back into title contention after submitting Yair Rodriguez.

Lopez quickly pressured Ortega in the opening round, landing a decisive strike early on. Despite this, Ortega demonstrated resilience by staying upright and enduring the full fight. Ultimately, Ortega was defeated by unanimous decision, a result he reflected on some months later.

The most notable moment came within the first 30 seconds when Lopez landed a powerful two-punch combination to Ortega’s chin. Some observers thought the second punch might have knocked Ortega out. Ortega admitted to feeling the impact but also mentioned feeling a bit unsettled by Lopez’s game plan, which relied heavily on early pressure. He noted Lopez seemed to tire as the fight went on, which gave Ortega some opportunities, especially in the latter rounds.

Despite his efforts to recover in rounds two and three, Ortega remained under Lopez’s control. Comparing the fight to a race, Ortega said the early damage forced him into a challenging comeback situation. Typically stronger in longer fights, Ortega struggled to capitalize fully in a three-round bout. Before facing Lopez, Ortega’s recent fights were typically five rounds long.

Ortega is now scheduled to return against former bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling on August 23rd at UFC Shanghai in a co-main event.

Fan Take: This loss and Ortega’s candid reflections highlight the brutal and unpredictable nature of MMA, where one moment can change the trajectory of a fight and a fighter’s career. For fight fans, it underscores the importance of adaptability and resilience, and Ortega’s upcoming bout against Sterling promises to be a pivotal moment for his comeback and the featherweight division’s future.
