Tottenham Hotspur is keen on bringing back Mauricio Pochettino as their head coach following the dismissal of Thomas Frank. Currently sitting in 16th place, just above the relegation zone, they trail West Ham United by five points. However, it appears Pochettino might remain in his role as national team coach until after the 2026 World Cup.

Spurs Looking to Rehire Pochettino

According to the Telegraph, Spurs hope to reinstate Pochettino after Frank’s exit, but the timeline suggests they may have to wait until after the World Cup. Supporters chanted Pochettino’s name during a recent loss to Newcastle; he had previously led the team from 2014 to 2019, taking them to the Champions League final and maintaining an unbeaten home record in his final season.

The board is reportedly aware of the strong support for Pochettino among fans, though it’s uncertain if he would join the club if they faced the grim possibility of relegation. A source indicated that he “would walk back to the club” if invited.

Short-Term Solutions?

Spurs might consider appointing an interim manager temporarily, similar to Manchester United’s choice of Michael Carrick after dismissing Ruben Amorim. A potential candidate could be former Spurs striker Robbie Keane, who is currently with Ferencvaros. The club could also look to former Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi, who recently left Marseille; however, his willingness to return to coaching so soon remains uncertain.

Can Spurs Avoid Relegation?

In their statement on Frank’s departure, Spurs clarified that there was no mutual agreement and confirmed that he was “leaving today.”

They stated: “The club has decided to make a change in the men’s head coach position, with Thomas Frank departing today.” The club further mentioned they aimed to provide Frank with the necessary time and resources but that recent performances dictated the need for change.

“Thomas has shown unwavering dedication during his time at the club, and we appreciate his contributions. We wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

Given their current form, Frank’s position was deemed unsustainable, with Spurs winless in the league this year and their last victory dating back to December 28 against Crystal Palace. They have 12 games remaining, with their next match against Arsenal, which could mark the debut of the new interim manager.

What’s Next?

Spurs announced that winger Wilson Odbert will miss the rest of the season due to a torn ACL suffered against Newcastle. They face a crucial match against Arsenal next. A victory is essential for Spurs but could simultaneously impact Arsenal’s title hopes, as they currently sit atop the league and Frank had some ties to their North London rivals even before his departure.

Fan Take: This news is significant for soccer fans as it highlights the growing tension at Tottenham and the potential return of a beloved manager. Pochettino’s reappointment could not only revitalize Spurs’ struggling campaign but also reshape the dynamics in the Premier League, making it a thrilling season to watch.
